November 20, 1989. On that day, the Convention on the Rights of the Child was signed by the United Nations. Meanwhile, 34 years later, almost all countries in the world have signed the Convention, but still too few children and young people know of the existence of their rights. Also in Belgium. We therefore developed an awareness campaign for het Kinderrechtencommissariaat.
With the message "Give young people a voice" we want to make children and young people aware of their rights and call on them to stand up for their rights. At the same time we want to encourage schools and other professionals close to young people to support them when their rights are violated.
We designed posters that were distributed to schools through the Guidooh school poster network, while an online campaign via Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest encouraged teachers to highlight children's rights in their classrooms. To help them do this, we created lesson packs that we sent to schools. The teaching packets included posters, stickers and a mind map, with which the subject matter could be presented in a fun and accessible way. An always-on campaign and accompanying landing pages clearly explained the various children's rights.
We also focused on PR: influencers, news editors and numerous organizations received campaign materials and a cool T-shirt that illustrator Jango Jim designed especially for the occasion.
A solid effort that could count on a lot of follow-up. Among others, influencer Samuel de Graef, Flemish Minister of Youth Benjamin Dalle and various youth organizations including the Overkop-huizen, vzw JONG, Habbekrats, Lejo, JOC and Jes vzw posted videos and photos on their channels on Children's Rights Day. In them they explained why youth rights are so important.
We also saw VRT presenters wearing the T-shirt that same day, Ketnet devoted an extensive news item to children's rights during Karrewiet, and our poster even appeared in De Ideale Wereld.
