The Sigma Plan is still unknown to many, and therefore unfortunately unloved. It is a project of De Vlaamse Waterweg NV and the Agency for Nature and Forest. It aims to better protect Flanders against flooding of the Schelde River and its tributaries. At the same time, it also creates a unique river nature.
although the Sigma Plan is actually everywhere, the magnitude of the project and its positive impact is still too little recognized. In the multitude of communications we are rolling out as part of the Sigma Plan, a common thread is important, both substantively and visually.
The Sigma Plan includes numerous project areas spread across Flanders, and communication needs to happen about each of these projects. However, with so many of them, consistency was sometimes hard to find. Our designers didn’t start from scratch (you know, throwing out the baby with the bathwater), but instead developed a strong branding to standardize and enhance the various communication actions. Recognizability is key: on a riverbank, on the street, and on your smartphone. This way, we make the work (and especially the results) of the Sigma Plan more accessible to every Fleming.
To avoid an abrupt change in style, we kept the strong elements of the previous logo. Using the same elements, we created a new wordmark: the name Sigmaplan, flanked by 3 dynamic lines. The middle blue line symbolizes a river, the outer green lines nature. An abstract and contemporary visualization of the core of Sigmaplan. And although you may not immediately notice it, 3 is a constant throughout the branding. A grid of 3, 6 or 9 columns and rows allows for a wide variety of layouts without sacrificing consistency.
The new brand identity lends itself fully to the design of highly creative concepts as well. How about a real info-tainer, fully wrapped and designed by us? Or a series of engaging listening stories, passionately narrated by actor Warre Borgmans, for which we also composed sonic branding. Each time we brought complex and (even though that sounds contradictory when it comes to water) dry subject matter in an engaging, instructive and approachable way.
But of course, the new brand identity also lends itself perfectly to more classic declinations. Like the project sheets. The Sigma Plan has about fifteen project areas, most of which are still in progress. For each of these areas, we created a project sheet that informs local residents, visitors and partners during, for example, regional information days or a visit to the project area. We gave each project sheet the same structure, applied the brand identity and also included different language versions.
And when a project area is fully completed, we create an A5 brochure for that area. This brochure contains more detailed information, such as the area's history, and is designed to be used for a longer period of time.
