No-Code tools: new freedom for designers

No-Code tools, such as Webflow, offer a unique opportunity for Web designers. They allow you to design and build campaign sites, landing pages, entire websites or even platforms for games without writing a single line of code. This allows me to iterate, test and make changes smoothly. So I have full control over the creative process, from design to implementation. This leads to a shorter turnaround time, allowing clients to see their website online faster.

Make no mistake: Webflow is not a complex tool. But by connecting it with other tools, we can still create punishing digital ecosystems. Think integration of Zapier to set automations or even fill a particular block via an external RSS feed. Webflow itself also continues to develop every month to make the tool better and better. For example, a few months ago they added multilingualism (often a requirement in Belgium).

The supporting role of AI in web design

In my work process, of course, I also use AI tools. For example, with ChatGPT I can generate texts for different purposes and even solve code challenges. Then, with Midjourney, I create images that fit well with the colors and look of my design. These AI tools save me valuable time that I would otherwise spend searching through documentation and stock photo websites. So this way, I can give clients a good idea of what their website will eventually look like faster.

Choosing the right course of action for each project

The future of Web design lies in finding the right balance. On the one hand, No-Code tools provide more (creative) freedom and more speed in development for smaller projects. On the other hand, traditional development methods, such as Drupal, remain indispensable for larger projects with more technical complexity, such as subsites, extensive search functions or a connection to a CRM, ERP or ATS.

In our Cartel Agency, we always do a technology-independent preliminary process, for both wireframing and design, with our clients. Then we decide together which system to build in. As a web designer, I do always try to combine the best of both worlds to meet the diverse needs of our clients.
