In the second episode of our podcast By Humans, Ann Claes was our guest. Ann is co-founder of Masjien and technology lead at the European Fashion Alliance. We sat down with her to discuss fashion, technology and Generation Alpha. In this article, we summarize the main insights.
Gen Alpha's view digital avatars as an important form of self-expression. In virtual worlds, such as Roblox and Fortnite, they can not only style their avatars, but also fully develop and personalize them. This goes far beyond just customizing garments: they create a digital identity that represents them in different virtual environments.
Generation Alpha wants to participate in the creation process. Cocreation is not hype, but a real need of this generation. They like to tackle things together.
Based on Ann Claes' insights, here are some strategies brands can use to prepare for the arrival of Generation Alpha.
Brands can expand their offerings to include digital products and experiences that fit Generation Alpha's virtual identities. These can range from virtual clothing and accessories to digital "skins" for avatars. "Virtual worlds offer a unique opportunity to make long-term, in-depth connections with customers. Unlike fleeting interactions through traditional channels, brands can offer minute-long conversations and experiences in virtual environments," said Ann Claes.
Brands should commit to cocreation with Gen Alpha's. Think design contests, participation in product development or initiatives where they can share ideas and vote on new products. By capitalizing on cocreation and the aforementioned virtual identity, brands can differentiate themselves and remain relevant to this new generation.
