A while back, we asked Kapitein Winokio if he wanted to participate in a campaign against parenting stress for Kind en Gezin. Not only did we get an enthusiastic yes, he also wrote an unforgettable article. In this interview we look back on the collaboration.
Central to our campaign is "Doe de 4-4-4," the song you created for us. Our copywriter Jan initiated the lyrics. Did that help?
Absolutely! I love rhymes and rhythmic lyrics, lyrics that are nicely hermetically screwed together. That was already in order. There was also a lot of input from Child and Family. Certain family situations had to be in the text, or words like "and" or "yet" to represent the sum of the stress in a family. Jan's text was already 95% right and of a very high standard. So yes, that definitely helped!
How familiar are you with the issues of parenting stress?
I don't have children myself, but of course I was a child myself and saw parenting stress in my childhood. I also have many friends with children, in different age groups. I know that sometimes there is parenting stress with them, but not of such a nature that they freak out. Anyway, it's a real thing and it's important to have a song made around it.
Do you play the song during your concerts?
We played the song at the beginning of this tour. There was a very good response to that. But for our summer set, unfortunately, the song was too long. We have many more great songs than time granted us at summer festivals, and making a setlist like this is always a matter of "kill your darlings." We looked into shortening the song, but that detracted from its intent. But "Do the 4-4-4" is still sitting ready on our spare bench!
Did you get reactions from musician colleagues to the song?
Yes, very many positive reactions, especially from the young parents. Like Nele, the accordionist in our group. Who said, "Winok, it's crazy that you can describe those situations so well." Ode to copywriter Jan for this.
Last question! Shooting the music video was pretty intense. How did you experience that day?
I have been in tougher situations than this because I have been through much longer shooting days. What struck me about this shoot was how professional the whole team was. It was always about the end result, not about egos or unimportant side issues. I liked that. Because it's all about the end result, right? And that end result is worth it!
Thank you for this interview, Captain!
