The impact of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic greatly accelerated the adoption of digital technologies. That means many children now spend more time online than ever before. Dado notes, "We communicate more often through screens than in person. Technology is also taking over many tasks that used to be done by people." This has led to fewer face-to-face interactions, making the need for authentic connections even more urgent.

The rise of AI-based 'characters'

An interesting development in this context is the emergence of AI-based "characters" that are becoming increasingly realistic. Platforms such as character.ai enable users to have conversations with sophisticated chatbots that respond like real people. Dado explains: "There is 1 bot, the Psychologist, that has already had millions of conversations and is trained on models that could provide advice on mental problems. So Generation Z and Alpha are using this bot very actively."

According to research, Generation Z is the loneliest generation. 73% of 16- to 24-year-olds report feeling alone from time to time. This type of technology provides an alternative form of connection for children who may have difficulty with social interactions in the real world. Moreover, it is often cheaper than a visit to the psychologist.

The question, however, is whether AI is the right solution to this problem. "I understand that a lot of people are concerned about that," Dado said. "We suddenly find ourselves with a generation that has very little social connection, 70% less than the generation before, has a lot of mental problems and experiences loneliness. We then try to solve that with technology, even though we're not sure it provides the right answer."

Back to the essence

At the same time, we are seeing a trend where people are consciously seeking more authentic and human connections. Despite digitalization, there is a growing appreciation for face-to-face encounters, in-depth conversations and emotional intimacy. Social media, originally intended to bring us closer together, have often had the opposite effect. Many people feel isolated and unhappy. "So the studies showing less social interaction and more loneliness actually illustrate the need to connect with each other," Dado said.

Stay committed to human relationships

In this rapidly changing digital world, finding the balance between technology and authentic human connection is crucial. While AI-based solutions such as chatbots may provide temporary relief, the fundamental need for real, emotional connection remains undiminished. Dado points out that the challenge for both Generation Z and Generation Alpha will be to create an environment where they feel safe and supported, both online and offline.
