This year we once again joined forces with Hogeschool PXL for a practical exercise. A hundred second-year business management students (majoring in marketing) were given the opportunity to work on a concrete communication assignment for one of our clients. In this way, they could further develop their strategic and creative thinking and we had the opportunity to see the marketing talents of tomorrow at work. Ulrica Fox, account executive, is happy to share how she experienced this process.
On February 28 we went down to PXL to brief the students on a youth campaign for BelOrta and a campaign for Accountants of Tomorrow to get young people interested in accountancy. Their assignment consisted of 3 parts: a quantitative study via online surveys of 16- to 25-year-olds, an analysis of the research results in order to make well-considered strategic choices and a translation of those choices into a creative briefing and mood board.
The students worked on their project for 3 months. Marjolein and I gave them feedback, made adjustments where necessary and answered their questions. Marjolein, as a strategist, focused on the theoretical elaboration and I, as an account executive, on the practical feasibility. During our guidance we noticed that the students were very motivated to achieve the best possible result. For example, some groups took the initiative to organize a focus group in addition to the quantitative research.
The 8 best groups were allowed to present their findings and proposals at our office on May 24. The jury included 2 teachers from PXL University, a representative of BelOrta, one from Accountants van Morgen and the account managers in charge of our team. Both our clients and we were impressed by the creativity and strategic insight of the students.
This collaboration with Hogeschool PXL was a whole new experience for Marjolein and me. Not only the students, but also we learned quite a bit. Although it was sometimes challenging, it gave us a lot of satisfaction to play a role in the learning process of the students. So actually both they and we grew during this assignment.
